Shincheonji Volunteer Group volunteers cleaned memorial gravestones at the May 18 National Cemetery, reflecting on Democracy and the Gwangju Democratization Movement.
As May arrives in Gwangju, memories of sacrifice and courage continue to resonate throughout the city. This year, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group carried out a memorial cleanup activity at the National May 18 Cemetery, honoring those connected to the Gwangju Democratization Movement and reflecting on the enduring value of Democracy.
More than 120 volunteers, including teenagers and middle-aged participants, joined the activity. The event was organized not only to maintain the cemetery environment ahead of increased visitors but also to remember the spirit of solidarity and sacrifice associated with the Gwangju Democratization Movement.
For many participants, the experience became more than volunteer work. It was a moment to quietly reflect on history and the meaning of Democracy in everyday life.

A Time of Reflection and Respect
Before beginning the cleanup, volunteers offered flowers and observed a silent tribute in remembrance of those who lost their lives. The atmosphere remained calm and respectful as participants reflected on the historical meaning of May 1980.
The Shincheonji Volunteer Group emphasized that remembering history through action can help younger generations better understand the sacrifices connected to the Gwangju Democratization Movement.
Participants from different age groups stood together during the ceremony, showing how the values of Democracy continue to connect generations today.
Cleaning Gravestones with Sincere Dedication
Honoring Each Name with Care
Volunteers carefully cleaned approximately 780 gravestones located within the memorial area. Kneeling beside each stone, participants removed dust and pollen while ensuring the engraved names remained clearly visible.
The activity carried symbolic meaning beyond environmental cleanup. Each gravestone represented a story connected to the pursuit of Democracy, and volunteers approached the task with sincerity and respect.
The Shincheonji Volunteer Group focused not only on improving the memorial environment but also on creating a meaningful opportunity for reflection about the Gwangju Democratization Movement.
Younger Generations Learning Through Participation
Democracy Remembered Through Action
One of the most meaningful aspects of the event was the participation of students and younger volunteers. Rather than learning history only through textbooks, participants experienced the memorial site directly.
Visitors observing the activity expressed appreciation for seeing younger generations engage with the values of Democracy through action and service.
The Shincheonji Volunteer Group highlighted that preserving the meaning of the Gwangju Democratization Movement requires both remembrance and continued participation within the community.
Through volunteer service, participants were able to connect historical memory with present-day responsibility.
Continuing the Spirit of Service and Remembrance
The memorial cleanup became a meaningful reminder that acts of service can also preserve history and shared values. By caring for the memorial environment, volunteers expressed gratitude while honoring the spirit of Democracy.
The Shincheonji Volunteer Group stated that it plans to continue community-centered volunteer activities that promote remembrance, sharing, and civic responsibility.
As visitors continue to come to the cemetery, the spirit of the Gwangju Democratization Movement remains present through both memory and action.
