On the morning the Lunar New Year holiday began, Yeosu Coastal Passenger Terminal was filled with departure announcements and the steady movement of travelers heading toward nearby islands. Compared to ordinary days, the atmosphere felt noticeably busier. Families stood in line at ticket counters, winter coats pulled tight against the cold wind, while conversations about returning home echoed throughout the terminal.

Sharing Warmth at Yeosu Coastal Passenger Terminal

Yeosu Coastal Passenger Terminal operates regular routes connecting Geomundo, Yeondo, Hamgumi, and Dunbyeong Island. According to the Yeosu Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, approximately 20,000 travelers were expected to use the terminal during the Lunar New Year period.

With increased passenger flow, emergency safety personnel were positioned throughout the facility. In the midst of that movement, volunteers wearing traditional hanbok approached citizens carefully and offered New Year greetings.

Along with the words, “Happy New Year,” they distributed small fortune pouch air fresheners and hand warmers printed with promotional messages for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo.

Conversations That Began with a Simple Question

The Shincheonji Volunteer Group asked passersby whether they were aware that Yeosu would host the world’s first island-themed expo. What followed were brief but sincere exchanges.

Travelers waiting to board ferries received the small gifts with smiles. Some expressed excitement about reuniting with family. Others shared hopes that the upcoming expo would bring pride and vitality to Yeosu.

On that day, approximately 200 fortune pouches and hand warmers were distributed in front of the terminal.

Extending Outreach to Local Markets

The activity did not stop at the passenger terminal. The Shincheonji Volunteer Group also visited around 30 nearby shops, including dried seafood, fruit vendors, and Dolsan gat kimchi stores.

Volunteers offered New Year greetings and delivered the prepared gifts. Shop owners facing economic challenges shared hopes that the upcoming expo would attract visitors and contribute to revitalizing the local economy.

Continued Campaigns Since 2024

The Shincheonji Volunteer Group Yeosu Branch has carried out promotional campaigns and environmental cleanup activities in support of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo since 2024.

The expo is scheduled to take place from September 5 to November 4, 2026, at the main venue in Jimo District of Dolsan and sub-venues on Gaedo and Geumodo. Around 30 island-holding countries are expected to participate, highlighting ecological, historical, and cultural values of islands.

This outreach during the Lunar New Year was one part of an ongoing effort to combine seasonal greetings with meaningful community engagement.
