🌼 Stories on the Wall: A Community Revitalized Through Art
A Project That Began With a Resident’s Wish
On October 16, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Namdong Branch completed the second mural plaque of its “Stories on the Wall” project in Manbu Village, Namdong-gu, Incheon.
Earlier in June, volunteers had created a refreshing ocean-themed mural.
The volunteer group has continued carrying out community-centered mural and neighborhood improvement projects that bring encouragement and positive change to local residents.
During that time, one resident gazing from across the street expressed a simple wish:
“I wish flowers could bloom on our wall too.”
Taking this heartfelt request to heart, the volunteers selected a new theme: “A Wide Field of Dandelions.”
Careful Planning and Dedicated Effort
To deliver artwork that truly matched the village landscape, the team:
designed the mural concept
prepared the wall using putty and binder work starting September 22
completed the painting across a 20-day process
Every step was shaped by close communication with residents so that the art would reflect their hopes.
Bringing Color and Emotion to the Village
When the final touches were finished, one resident looked at the vibrant mural and said:
“The walls used to feel lifeless, but now they look alive. It makes me so happy.”
The mural did more than beautify the neighborhood — it strengthened community bonds.
Residents expressed gratitude by offering volunteers pancakes (jeon) and cool drinks, turning the worksite into a place of warmth and connection.
Similar volunteer activities have also strengthened bonds between residents and volunteers in many other communities through acts of service and care.
A Village Sustained by Compassion
Manbu Village, known for its quiet alleys and elderly households, has long relied on neighborly care. The Namdong Branch has supported the community through:
fan cleaning
window screen repairs
small home-care services
A branch representative shared:
“Before we begin any project, we always listen to residents first. We visit each site to ensure the artwork blends naturally with the surroundings. We will continue serving Manbu Village with dedication.”
Art as a Bridge Between Generations
What once stood as a dull gray wall is now a bright story filled with life.
Through this mural project, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group demonstrated how small acts of service can transform both spaces and hearts — reminding the community that kindness, like flowers, blooms wherever it is nurtured.
