Shincheonji Volunteer Group Restores Flood-Damaged Geoje Grape Farm

When heavy rain strikes, media spotlight and initial relief efforts often surge immediately following the disaster. However, statistical trends show that volunteer numbers drop by more than 76% just three weeks after a major flood event. While initial response focuses on the immediate aftermath, long-term recovery requires ongoing labor to help residents restore their daily livelihoods. Addressing this critical stage, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group sent 71 volunteers to a flood-damaged grape farm in Bangha-ri, Dundeok-myeon, Geoje City, South Gyeongsang Province, on September 5. By coordinating directly with the Geoje Volunteer Center, the group targeted a vulnerable location where assistance had waned three weeks after the torrential rains. Over a four-hour operation, members cleared accumulated soil, reinforced physical structures, and collected thousands of liters of damaged crops to support the farm's recovery.

  • Foundation Stabilization: Volunteers reinforced the basic foundation of stone walls surrounding the farm that had collapsed during the storm to secure the immediate area.
  • Soil and Drainage Clearance: Members removed heavy soil layers that had covered the agricultural land and cleared blocked drainage channels to restore proper water flow.
  • Crop and Waste Collection: The team collected and processed lost grapes that had rotted or lost commercial value due to storm damage and sediment, along with general agricultural waste, gathering a total volume of 3,000 liters.

Key Messages and Responses

Statements from Farm Owner and Volunteer Representatives

The owner of the orchard, Lee Jae-gyu, expressed appreciation for the support provided during a difficult period, noting that the assistance helped him gain the courage to rebuild after facing severe damage.

A volunteer participating in the field operations shared that working together to excavate soil and seeing the farm gradually regain its original form provided a deep sense of accomplishment.

A representative from the Shincheonji Volunteer Group stated that the essence of volunteer work involves offering continuous attention and support until affected residents can stand on their feet again, rather than ending aid after a few days. The representative added that the group will continue to collaborate systematically with local volunteer institutions to reach underserved areas.

Meaning of the Event

Addressing the Secondary Phase of Disaster Recovery

The activity in Geoje reflects a structured effort to address the prolonged recovery phase that follows initial disaster response. While immediate aid often drops significantly three weeks after severe flooding, long-term labor remains necessary to clear agricultural lands and rebuild livelihoods. By coordinating with local volunteer centers, the project demonstrated a systematic approach to community support, focusing on practical tasks required for full recovery.
