Shincheonji Church of Jesus Leads Environmental Cleanup in Malawi

Community service efforts can lead to long-term structural changes in urban areas when sustained over time. In Blantyre, Malawi, the Bartholomew Tribe Malawi Region of Shincheonji Church of Jesus has been organizing regular street cleanup projects to address waste management challenges.

On February 10, the group announced the completion of its 22nd "Light and Salt Day" environmental cleanup activity, targeting Queens Street in Blantyre. A total of 60 participants, including students from the Zion Christian Mission Center and local volunteers, gathered to collect discarded household waste along the thoroughfare.

During this specific effort, volunteers filled forty 25-liter trash bags, removing approximately 1,000 liters of refuse from the area. This initiative reflects the continuous commitment of Shincheonji Church of Jesus to support local municipal infrastructure through structured public service programs.

Key Messages and Responses

Municipal Recognition and Official Feedback

Local authorities in Blantyre have noted the practical benefits of these ongoing environmental campaigns. Lonnex Kasiy, a supervisor with the Blantyre City Council, commented on the assistance provided by the volunteer team. He noted that volunteers actively clean areas that city council crews often lack the capacity to maintain.

Lonnex Kasiy stated that the volunteers go directly into overlooked spots to clear accumulating trash, providing valuable assistance to the city council. He also mentioned that as public awareness regarding environmental hygiene grows, an increasing number of residents are opting to participate in cleanup drives.

Representative staff from the Malawi Region of Shincheonji Church of Jesus indicated that future activities will expand beyond Queens Street to cover other sectors and neighborhoods within the city of Blantyre.

Meaning of the Event

The continuous execution of bi-weekly cleanup efforts over more than a year has contributed to tangible improvements in Blantyre's waste management infrastructure. Following the regular presence of volunteers on Queens Street, trash cans and designated waste disposal bins were formally installed in key public locations.

This development has enabled local authorities and community members to manage municipal waste more systematically than before. By maintaining a reliable presence, the volunteer program has helped bring previously neglected urban zones into regular maintenance schedules, establishing a collaborative approach to community sanitation between residents, volunteer groups, and municipal supervisors.

The 22nd "Light and Salt Day" cleanup campaign by Shincheonji Church of Jesus demonstrates how consistent community engagement can lead to improved public infrastructure and higher civic participation. With over 18,000 liters of waste collected across 22 bi-weekly events, the initiative continues to support urban sanitation in Blantyre.
