As the rainy season approaches each year, one question often comes to mind: how much difference can a simple act of preparation make before a disaster occurs?

I recently observed a community service activity carried out by the Shincheonji Volunteer Group in Uijeongbu. Rather than responding after damage happens, the volunteers focused on prevention. Their efforts centered on improving safety in flood-prone areas before the summer monsoon season arrives.

What stood out most was that this activity was not simply about cleaning streets. It was about helping residents feel more secure in a neighborhood that has experienced flooding concerns in the past.

Preparing Vulnerable Areas for the Monsoon Season

On May 23, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Uijeongbu Branch conducted a safety and environmental improvement campaign in the residential area near Baekseok Stream in Ganeung-dong, Uijeongbu.

The activity was organized to help reduce flood risks and improve public safety before the arrival of seasonal heavy rains.

A total of 16 volunteers participated in the effort. They inspected drainage facilities and flood prevention equipment while cleaning and maintaining storm drains and surrounding areas. Watching the volunteers work carefully around drainage systems highlighted how important preventive maintenance can be during the rainy season.

Why Flood Prevention Matters in This Neighborhood

Learning from Previous Flooding Incidents

The Baekseok Stream area has experienced repeated concerns related to rising water levels during periods of heavy rainfall.

According to the information shared during the activity, nearby homes suffered flood damage when water levels rose rapidly in July 2024. Semi-basement households were particularly affected as rainwater entered living spaces and caused property damage. Similar incidents had also occurred in 2019, reinforcing the importance of advance preparation.

As I listened to the explanations provided to residents, it became clear why preventive measures continue to be emphasized. Small maintenance efforts completed before the rainy season can help reduce risks when heavy rainfall arrives.

Community Awareness and Environmental Protection Together

Sharing Safety Information with Local Residents

In addition to environmental maintenance work, volunteers provided information to approximately 300 local residents about flood prevention and monsoon-season safety guidelines.

The Shincheonji Volunteer Group also incorporated a seasonal environmental protection campaign into the activity. This combination of environmental stewardship and disaster prevention created a practical opportunity for residents to learn about community safety.

Several residents expressed appreciation for the effort. One participant shared that working together, even through small actions, can create meaningful change. Residents living near Baekseok Stream also noted that clogged storm drains had been a recurring concern and welcomed the maintenance work. Another resident who lives in a semi-basement home said seeing preventive preparations helped ease anxiety about potential flood damage during the rainy season.
