Organized Sections, Collective Action

Approximately 50 members of various age groups participated. The volunteers divided into sections and focused on removing illegally discarded waste and obstacles interfering with water flow along Suseokcheon and nearby residential areas.

From the riverbank to the surrounding village paths, the activity continued methodically. Waste that had been left unattended was steadily collected, and the environment gradually regained a cleaner appearance.

A participant in their 50s shared that watching volunteers step into the stream without hesitation was moving. The scene reflected a shared commitment to protecting the local river.

Part of a Long-Term City Initiative

The clean-up was conducted under Cheongju City’s river preservation program launched in 2017. Through the “One Company, One River” campaign, institutions and organizations are assigned specific waterways and encouraged to maintain consistent environmental care. More than 40 organizations currently participate.

The Shincheonji Volunteer Group Cheongju branch has continued river clean-up efforts since 2012. Over 14 years, it has conducted 142 volunteer activities. The cumulative number of participants exceeds 7,000, and approximately 177,500 liters of waste have been collected.

The branch explained that river clean-up represents more than simple beautification. It reflects a process in which the local community works together to care for its natural surroundings.
