Shincheonji Volunteer Group Gwangmyeong Branch Leads Carbon Neutral Campaign for a Cleaner City

ðŸŒ± Spreading Awareness of Carbon Neutrality in Everyday Life

The Shincheonji Volunteer Group Gwangmyeong Branch conducted a carbon neutrality campaign and eco-bag sharing event at Exit 2 of Cheolsan Station on October 19.

Since 2020, the branch has continuously promoted environmental awareness through local activities aligned with Korea’s 2050 carbon-zero goals. This year’s campaign encouraged citizens to practice small daily actions that make a big difference for the planet.

Volunteers emphasized that around 500,000 tons of waste are generated daily across the country, and the fastest way to protect the environment is by reducing disposable product use.

♻️ The Power of One Small Change

Plastic bags are a direct contributor to carbon emissions. Koreans use an average of 420 plastic bags per person each year. If just 10% of the population reduced their usage, it would cut 60,000 tons of CO₂ annually, equivalent to planting over 6.7 million trees.

At the campaign site, citizens signed a Carbon Neutrality Pledge and received reusable Tyvek eco-bags, which are recyclable and durable for long-term use.

Interactive environmental quizzes—including recycling knowledge and OX questions—helped participants learn in a fun and engaging way.

Additionally, volunteers introduced the “Climate Militia” app, which rewards users with carbon points for eco-friendly actions that can be converted into local currency. Many citizens signed up on the spot, eager to join the movement.

💬 Citizens’ Voices and Reflections

“When we explained that daily waste equals 30,000 city buses, many were shocked. Using one eco-bag may seem small, but it prevents hundreds of plastic bags from being used.”

“I didn’t know it takes up to 100 years for a plastic bag to decompose. From now on, I’ll always carry the eco-bag I received today.”

A representative from the Gwangmyeong Branch added,

“Our goal is not just to hand out eco-bags but to empower citizens to become active protectors of the environment. Every small effort adds up to make Gwangmyeong a cleaner and greener city.”

🌿 Continuing the Journey Toward a Greener Future

The Gwangmyeong Branch plans to continue carbon neutrality campaigns and will collaborate with the Disabled Persons Association for a “Sharing Warmth” volunteer project at the end of October, extending their efforts to bring positive change to the community.
